MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Urban Design Studio is to assist real communities and its citizens in developing sound growth strategies and specific design solutions for redevelopment purposes.
The School of Architecture advocates the building and preservation of rural and urban landscapes which promote civility, healthy living and environmental stewardship. The Andrews University team will be led by Assistant Professor Andrew von Maur, who regularly consults for Duany Plater-Zyberk & Co. – one of the most significant national leaders in town planning. His Urban Design Studio has recently been recognized with a 2007 Charter Award of Excellence by the Congress for the New Urbanism for its urban design and planning work on the Gulf Coast in Mississippi. Past projects have led to municipal adoption as well as implementation. The team, consisting of 26 graduate architecture students trained in urban design principles, will be co-directed by Assistant Professor Troy Homenchuk, who will lead a parallel effort to produce specific architectural guidelines for the project area.
Previous projects by the Division of Architecture include community plans for Palmer (Alaska), Empire, Suttons Bay, Traverse City and Wayne (Michigan), Billings (Montana), Plymouth (Indiana), Henderson Point and Saucier (Mississippi).
